Sohar - The mythical birthplace of Sinbad the Sailor

Sohar is a port city on Oman’s northern coast. Facing the Gulf of Oman, the centuries-old Sohar Fort houses a museum exploring the city’s cultural and trading past. Sohar Corniche stretches along the waterfront, with a park, restaurants and a fish market. To the west is a camel-racing track. Sohar is also a base for exploring the craggy banks of nearby ravines, including Wadi Al Jizi and Wadi Salahi.

Sohar is the second or third most populous area in Oman. Not much to do at night unfortunately, no mega malls, just a small one and a couple of decent hypermarkets. Sohar is mid-way between Muscat and Dubai and has a sizeable industrial estate. It is a very nice town.

1. Sohar Fort
Sohar Fort is located in downtown Sohar within a very close distance to the central souq. Fees—500 Baisa for Adults, 600 Baisa for Childern above 6 years.

Visting Time: 8 am to 1.30 pm and 4 pm to 6 pm from Saturday to Wednesday. 9 am to 1 pm on Thursdays.

The name Sohar narrates a legendary past. It is said that it is this city of Sohar where the adventurous sailor Sindbad was born which was once very important in Oman. The first floor of the fort illustrates the ancient forts in Oman and a climb up to the roof gives a quaint view of the sea and Sohar.

2. Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque
The mosque has four further minarets, and together the five towers symbolise the five pillars of Islam: profession of faith, prayers, giving of alms, fasting and pilgrimage. Sultan Qaboos Mosque in Sohar is open to non-Muslims between 8am and 11am from Saturday to Wednesday.
