Nizwa - Amazing as ever

Description

Nizwa is an ancient city in the Ad Dakhiliyah region of northern Oman. It sits on a plain characterized by seasonal rivers and palm plantations. It's known for Nizwa Fort, a castle with a huge cylindrical tower built in the 17th century to defend the city's position on a major trade route. The adjoining marketplace, Nizwa Souk, is lined with handicrafts stalls and silversmiths working in small shops.

Marked by a grand new double-arched gateway, the town forms a natural access point for the historic sites of Bahla and Jabrin, and for excursions up the mountain roads to Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams. Nizwa is now the second-biggest tourist destination in Oman. It was named the Capital of Islamic Culture in 2013. The city is known for date cultivation, the most highly prized varieties of which are khalas and khumaizi.

1. Nizwa Fort
The Nizwa Fort is a large castle in Nizwa, Oman built in the seventeenth century. It is a popular tourist destination. The Fort is open from Sat to Thu 8 AM to 8 PM and Friday 8 AM to 11:30 AM and 1:30 PM to 8 PM. Admission fees are OMR 5, OMR 2 for Omanis while the children go in free

2. Nizwa Souq
Exploring the Nizwa Souq is one of the top things to do in Oman. It is one of the oldest markets in the country and you will find fruit, meat, sweets, pottery, souvenirs and antiques. There is a lot to discover as you stroll through in the middle of the locals.

3. Bhala Fort
The oasis of Bahla owes its prosperity to the Banu Nebhan, the dominant tribe in the area from the 12th to the end of the 15th century. The ruins of the immense fort, with its walls and towers of unbaked brick and its stone foundations, is a remarkable example of this type of fortification and attests to the power of the Banu Nebhan.

6. Jabreen Castle
Jabreen Castle (حصن جبرين) (also spelled Jibreen Castle or Jabrin Castle) is the most beautiful historic castle in the whole of Oman. Jabreen Castle is different from other Omani forts because it was not built in the times of war and is not a fortification that was expanded by different Imams overs centuries. It is basically a palace constructed in times of peace by a ruler who was passionate about science and art and that made it the most beautiful historic castle found in the Sultanate. Jabreen Castle is open from Saturday to Thursday from 9am to 4pm and on Friday from 8am to 11am. Entry fee is 500 baizas for adults.
